Use It or Lose It: How to Use Your Dental Benefits Before the Year Ends
in Miramar Beach & Destin, FL

Most dental insurance plans reset on January 1, so unused benefits and flexible spending dollars are usually gone once the new year starts. If you have coverage, the best move is to book the care you need by early December so your 2026 benefits go toward your health instead of expiring.

At Serenity Smiles in Miramar Beach, we help families and adults from Destin and the surrounding area make sense of their coverage every year. This guide explains what resets, what may carry over, and what is worth scheduling now.

Do Dental Insurance Benefits Really Expire on December 31?

For most plans, yes. Many dental plans run on a calendar year, which means your annual maximum, the most your plan will pay toward your care in a year, starts over on January 1. Your deductible typically resets too. Unused benefits usually do not roll over, although a few plans offer a limited carryover, and some employers use a plan year that begins in a different month. Your benefits summary or insurance card will tell you which applies to you.

Many plans cap annual benefits somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000. Plans often cover preventive care such as exams and cleanings at or near 100 percent, basic care such as fillings at around 80 percent, and major care such as crowns at around 50 percent. Your plan may be different, so it is worth checking your own numbers.

What Should I Do Before the Year Ends?

A few simple steps can help you get full value from your coverage:

  1. Check what you have left. Call your insurance company or log in to your online account to see how much of your annual maximum and deductible you have used so far.
  2. Schedule your preventive visits. A routine dental exam and professional cleaning are often covered at or near full value, and they can catch small problems while they are still easy and affordable to treat.
  3. Ask about treatment you have already been told you need. If you have been putting off a filling, crown, or other planned treatment, finishing it in 2026 lets you use benefits that would otherwise expire.
  4. Book early. December schedules fill quickly around the holidays, and some treatments take more than one visit. For crowns and bridges, many plans count the date the final restoration is placed, so starting in November leaves room for a rescheduled appointment.

What If I Need More Treatment Than My Remaining Benefits Will Cover?

You can often split care across two benefit years. Problems that are painful or getting worse, such as a decayed or cracked tooth, should be treated now. Larger treatment that is less urgent can sometimes be staged, with part completed before December 31 and the rest after your annual maximum resets in January. That approach lets you use the last of your 2026 benefits and a fresh 2027 maximum without delaying care that cannot wait.

Waiting on a painful tooth is rarely worth it. A small cavity that could be handled with a dental filling can grow into a problem that needs a root canal if it is left alone.

Do FSA and HSA Dollars Expire Too?

A health flexible spending account (FSA) is often use-it-or-lose-it. For 2026, the IRS limit on employee contributions to a health FSA is $3,400. Employers may allow either a carryover of up to $680 into the next year or a grace period of up to two and a half months, but they are not required to offer either, so check with your plan administrator before assuming you have extra time.

Dental care that treats or prevents disease, such as exams, cleanings, fillings, and crowns, generally qualifies for FSA spending. Purely cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening usually do not. Health savings account (HSA) funds generally do not expire at the end of the year, so there is no year-end deadline for those dollars.

Which Dental Treatments Are Worth Scheduling Before the Year Ends?

Preventive Care for the Whole Family

Exams, cleanings, and X-rays are the benefits people most often leave unused. Children can also benefit from dental sealants, which many plans cover for kids, and our preventive dentistry and pediatric dentistry care help keep every age on track.

Restorative Care You Have Been Putting Off

Fillings, crowns and bridges, and root canals are common year-end treatments because they are often partly covered by insurance. Dr. Raj Patel and Dr. Yassar Patel can review what has been recommended and help you sort out what is urgent and what can safely wait.

Tooth Replacement

Coverage for dental implants and dentures varies widely. Some plans cover related steps such as extractions or the crown, while others exclude implants entirely. Ask our team to check your plan before you decide on a timeline.

Dental Emergencies and Cosmetic Care

Emergencies do not follow your benefit calendar. If you chip, crack, or lose a tooth, read what to do first in a dental emergency and call us right away. Cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening are usually not covered by insurance, so plan for those separately.

What If I Do Not Have Dental Insurance?

You still have options, and none of them expire on December 31. Serenity Smiles offers an in-house dental savings membership plan, in-house payment plans with 3, 6, and 12-month options, and CareCredit financing. You can learn more on our patient information page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does unused dental insurance roll over to the next year?

In most cases, no. Annual maximums and deductibles typically reset each year, and unused benefits are lost. A few plans include a limited rollover feature, so check your plan documents or ask your insurance company.

What is the last day to use my 2026 dental benefits?

For most calendar-year plans, it is December 31, 2026. Treatment generally needs to be completed by that date, not just started, so scheduling by early December gives you a cushion if an appointment needs to move.

Can I use my FSA for dental work?

Yes, in most cases. Exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and other care that treats or prevents dental disease generally qualify, while purely cosmetic treatments usually do not. Your plan administrator can confirm what is eligible and whether your account has a carryover or grace period.

Does Serenity Smiles accept my insurance?

We accept many plans, including AlwaysCare Benefits, Ameritas, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Florida Blue, Guardian, and MetLife, along with several others. Call our office and our team can walk you through what your plan covers.

Is a cleaning worth scheduling if I do not need any other treatment?

Yes. Preventive visits are often covered at or near full value, and they are the easiest way to put your benefits to use while keeping small issues from becoming larger ones.
